I am encouraged by Jesus choice of disciples. “Follow me,” was his invitation. Jesus did not choose any superheroes but regular men. These men who spent several years together with Jesus had problems and issues just like me. You would think that they were the best of the best.
Still Peter takes his eyes off of Jesus when he walks towards him on the water and begins to sink. Another time he denied knowing Jesus for fear of his own life. They had issues with pride and fear. They all deserted Jesus when the soldiers came to arrest him.
Even though they spent so much time with him, they did not truly know him until they met the resurrected Jesus who died on a cross and three days later returned to life.
It is still possible to know all what the Bible tells us about Jesus and still not know him. To know about someone is not the same as to know someone.
Paul prosecuted Christians until he was blinded by the light and met the resurrected Jesus, as one abnormally born, he himself said.
Has there been a moment in your life when you saw the light and met the resurrected Jesus? Perhaps not as dramatic as Paul’s experience but you realized that Jesus is real and you felt his presence?
I was saved when I was six. Jesus was real and I gave my life to him. I grew up and lost the connection that I had as a child. It was not the priority of my life.
Then a few years ago my life changed as I experienced that God is real. I felt his love and my soul caught on fire, just as Thomas the disciple, who could not believe that Jesus was alive until he saw the marks on his hands and the cut in the side. Together with Thomas I said, “My Lord and my God.”
